It was not until 1994 that peace talks led to a stabilizing situation. Since 2017, the country has increasingly had to deal with Islamist attacks and assaults. In the spring of 2020, these attacks by jihadist militia increased, especially in Cabo Delgabo province. The civil populaton increasingly became the target of those attacks. This led thousands to abandon their villages for safety in western Mozambique. The attacks by the extremist groups, which have been taking place repeatedly since 2017, have led to further destruction of the infrastructure. At the same time, an independent water supply was installed.
