The new podcast “Scalpel instead of Kalashnikov” from the Ö1 science series Dimensions focuses on our hospital in the Nuba Mountains, which has been providing medical care under extreme conditions for almost 30 years. Laura Salm-Reifferscheidt’s report accompanies the team on site, which treats seriously injured people, malaria patients and malnourished children on a daily basis – in the middle of an area that is repeatedly targeted by bombing and remains largely cut off from the outside world.

With the outbreak of the civil war in Sudan in April 2023, the already precarious situation has worsened: the number of wounded is rising, supply chains have been disrupted and the need is increasing dramatically. But despite all the adversity, the doctors and nurses continue to work tirelessly – with the simplest of resources, but with great determination.

This impressive documentary shows how courageous people save lives every day with their medical expertise and unwavering commitment – in a forgotten part of the world, far from the media spotlight.
