The situation in Lebanon

Political situation

The economic and political situation in Lebanon has been increasingly catastrophic for years. Cap Anamur has been working in Lebanon in the Syrian refugee settlements in the Sidon area since 2016. Inflation is currently rising faster than ever before, and many essential goods are no longer affordable for the majority of the population. With the growing economic crisis, the effects of the COVID pandemic, and ultimately since the explosion in Beirut, the situation in Lebanon is worsening. Most affected are the poorest of the population and the approximately 1,2 million syrian refugees, which have have to fight for their lives on a daily basis.

Social situation.

Many of the Syrian refugees have crossed the border to escape the war in their own country. Here, they usually live in large camps without financial security and in the uncertainty of whether and when they will be able to return home. Many of these settlements are located in the Sidon area south of the capital Beirut. The mediacal treatment there is insufficient. Since the consultation and treatment in health institutions in the region is not free of charge, many people, even with severe medical issues, stay untreated.

In Lebanon provides Cap Anamur free medical care, including a mobile clinic. The distribution of food packages are now also part of our relief work.

Our engagement in Lebanon

The supply situation for poor people in Lebanon is catastrophic. Since the outbreak of the Corona pandemic, the living situation of Syrian refugees in particular has worsened. The curfews lead to the disappearance of earning opportunities as day labourers. Food has become increasingly unaffordable due to the economic crisis and medicines are in short supply.

Distribution of food parcels

We also support some of the poorest families with food packages. Most of the time it is single mothers, widows or orphans that we help. One food package includes oil, sugar, rice, pasta, salt, tomato sauce and burgur and occasionly even some sweets for the children.

The situation in Lebanon is catastrophic – Cap Anamur will remain.

The already precarious supply situation was further aggravated by additional fuel shortages in the summer of 2021. Power cuts for hours throughout the country were the result, as electricity in Lebanon is supplied by petrol-powered generators. Refrigeration chains failed, tons of much-needed food spoiled. Increasing prices of food but also medicine are the consequence. The operation of hospitals is also dependent on power supply. The financial and economic crisis and the prevailing corruption are well-known factors that have currently led to inflation rising faster than ever before. Many essential goods are no longer affordable for the majority of the population.

  • With our mobile clinic, we continue to provide medical care despite the circumstances.
  • By distributing food packages, Cap Anamur supports those who are severely affected by poverty.
  • And with the project of a physiotherapy practice we can provide help to some children.
