Challeging living conditions in Bangladesh
Bangladesch is one of the poorest countries in the world. The gap between the rich and the poor is significant, and large parts of the population live in precarious conditions. Many people work in garment factories under inhumane conditions for wages that are insufficient to cover their basic needs and do not allow them to access healthcare. The political situation is currently highly unstable: Following the government’s ousting by a student-led protest movement, it remains unclear how the country will develop, whether free elections will take place, and what direction the political future will take. Growing dissatisfaction among the population, economic uncertainty, and a lack of reforms are further worsening the already challenging situation in the healthcare sector. Comprehensive medical care remains out of reach for many people, and the need for stable, functioning healthcare facilities continues to grow.
Bhanga – A growing hub with social challenges
Bhanga is a subdistrict (upazila) in the Faridpur region, around 85 kilometres from the capital Dhaka. Thanks to its strategic location at the intersection of several major transport routes and in close proximity to the new Padma Bridge, the longest bridge in Bangladesh, Bhanga is increasingly developing into an economic hub. Despite this positive development, many people in the region live in poverty, and access to medical care is often difficult or impossible for many families.
The Bhanga Upazila Health Complex is the central health centre for the surrounding communities and serves a population of almost 300,000 people. The hospital offers outpatient treatment, obstetric and paediatric care, basic diagnostics, vaccination programmes and family planning services. However, with only 50 beds, the facility is severely under capacity and struggling to cope with increasing demand.
Cap Anamur begins providing support in July 2025
In order to improve medical care in the long term, Cap Anamur began providing support in July 2025. Initially, we concentrated on the most urgent needs and started by improving basic care: old and defective hospital beds were replaced, and regular deliveries of medication ensure the continuous treatment of patients.
Initial measures: strengthening basic care
With the further expansion of the partnership, we plan to provide stronger technical support to the facility in the future, for example by supplying modern equipment such as X-ray and ultrasound technology. This will enable us to further improve the quality of medical care.
With our help, the Bhanga Health Complex will gradually become a stable, reliable point of contact for patients from across the region, thereby making an important contribution to strengthening public healthcare in Bangladesh.
