Ethiopia: Life-saving delivery of medicines for Suhul Hospital in Shire successfully completed
Cap Anamur has provided the Suhul Hospital in Shire with a vital supply of medicines, thereby closing important gaps in care.
In October 2024, Cap Anamur supported the Suhul Hospital in Shire, Tigray – in northern Ethiopia near the border with Eritrea – for the first time with a delivery of medicines and consumables. This has now been followed by another delivery of urgently needed goods for the hospital. This time, the majority of the medicines were procured directly on site in Shire and in the regional capital Mekelle.

The supplies were urgently needed, as the situation in Shire remains precarious even years after the civil war. Thousands of internally displaced people live in the city, while outbreaks of diseases such as malaria, cholera and measles are increasing. Our delivery arrived at just the right time: shortly after our delivery, the Ethiopian pharmaceutical agency EPSA had to temporarily suspend its work – its warehouses are empty and financial support from the US development agency USAID was cancelled. Suhul Hospital was also affected. State payments were suspended and the medical staff have been working under extremely difficult conditions ever since – often without salary.
Rainy season exacerbates humanitarian situation
Thanks to our support, the hospital was equipped with urgently needed medicines. The delivery was significantly larger than the first time and closed important supply gaps – despite major logistical challenges and scarce resources.
Those responsible at Suhul Hospital were deeply grateful for the quick and unbureaucratic help. The hospital director put it in a nutshell:
“Cap Anamur is a lifesaver. Without this help, the situation for the hospital and the local people would have been very difficult.”
The onset of the rainy season is further exacerbating the humanitarian situation. This made it all the more important that the delivery arrived on time. Even though some medicines could only be delivered with a delay, the intensive efforts on the ground and cooperation with regional wholesalers made it possible to ensure the best possible supply.
Cap Anamur remains committed to sustainably strengthening healthcare in Tigray. There is still a lack of important medicines – we are working to close these gaps as quickly as possible. Every contribution helps to continue such vital projects.
Our next step is to further expand our cooperation with the hospital. In doing so, we will continue to pursue our goal of providing acute emergency aid while strengthening the local healthcare system in the long term.
